The Director Corporate Compliance & Ethics – Europe will, together with the Global Vice President of Compliance develop, implement and oversee our clients European enterprise corporate compliance department and programs. This position will be responsible for key compliance initiatives in Europe, including policies and procedures, internal investigations, training, compliance counseling, diligence screening and compliance risk assessments. This position is critical to supporting the strategic and operational objectives by championing a centralized, coordinated approach to ethics and compliance across multiple business units in Europe and globally.
Functie
This role will be based from Amsterdam (Herengracht) in The Netherlands and will offer a high degree of flexible working. Regular travel within Europe will be expected. Hybrid working arrangements considered.
• Provide strategic leadership and corporate compliance advice for the European region, working closely with the VP, Global Corporate Compliance & Ethics and the General Counsel – Europe, the European Leadership Team as well as regional, national and facility leadership.
• Design, deliver and maintain the enterprise compliance program that governs our clients commitment to ensuring compliance with relevant law, industry codes, organizational standards, standards of good corporate governance, ethics and community expectations in Europe, working closely with the VP, Global Corporate Compliance & Ethics and the General Counsel – Europe.
• Strengthen the ethics and compliance culture by leading and continuously improving the European compliance program and proactively documenting and implementing remedial measures, as required.
• Partner with the business, including the global and regional leadership teams, to assess the governance and management of risks as the business pursues strategic opportunities, to challenge and support delivery of the commitments and strategy of the business.
• Provide subject-matter expertise and day-to-day, international (country-specific) and local guidance on relevant compliance and related regulatory matters in Europe, including, without limitation, anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering, ESG (including modern slavery), data privacy (including GDPR), cyber and data security, customs and trade compliance, whistleblowing, sanctions and antitrust.
• Develop policies, procedures, and processes to comply with applicable jurisdictional law, regulations and policies, contract requirements and European best practice.
• Develop and implement effective monitoring of compliance, in partnership with internal audit and business leaders.
• Develop and conduct mandatory compliance training and awareness programs.
• Lead best in class annual risk assessments and identify opportunities to strengthen internal compliance.
• Prepare and present periodic reporting to key stakeholders and senior leadership.
• Conduct and manage internal investigations and respond to whistleblower events in coordination with the Legal Team Europe.
• Facilitate external audits with customers and regulators.
• Drive expansion of the use of automated systems to implement controls and training.
• Develop and build strong cross-functional relationships to identify, assess and anticipate emerging compliance related risk areas across the company in Europe and provide support and guidance on the management of these emerging risks
• Participate in compliance-related programs led by multiple business units and provide support as needed.
• Ensure that record management systems are kept updated.
• Establish and build strong relationships with government and other regulatory authorities and continuously revalidate the state of compliance of the business.

Functie-eisen
• At least 10 – 20 years of relevant experience gained at a top tier law firm and/or in-house. Proven experience in successfully leading the compliance function in a European organization with multi regional experience/responsibility, partnering closely with senior leadership and cross-functional business partners.
• Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Dutch Law from a reputable university in The Netherlands. Risk and compliance related postgraduate qualifications/certifications highly regarded.
• Dutch lawyer with a current practicing certificate or admission to practice as advocaat (or with a willingness and ability to re-obtain such certificate or admission having previously been admitted to the bar).
• Experience in technology/digital organizations favorably viewed.
• Ability to provide thought leadership to business leaders versus a compliance only approach.
• Extensive experience conducting internal compliance audits.
• Strong working knowledge of business operations, processes and governance.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to translate technical and detailed information clearly and influence and drive connectivity across all levels of the organization.
• Demonstrated resilience, independence and objectivity.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to function in a fast-paced, highly visible, and changing team environment providing consistent, high quality output.
• Ability to function at a high level of effectiveness, flexibility, autonomy, and initiative without daily interaction with management.
• Ability to travel on a regular basis.
• Fluent in English, additional relevant language skills would be a plus.
